There are four main components of the GED .

The four components are Reading through Language Arts (150 minutes), Math (115 minutes), Science (90 minutes), and Social Studies (70 minutes). You will need to take a practice test and an official test for each subject. Practice test score guidance: 100-133 not likely to pass, 145-200 likely to pass, and 134-144 too close to call. A college-ready score is a 165 or better, and passing is a 145 or better. To get started, follow the steps outlined below and visit the resources linked here.

Steps to Complete

  • Visit GED.com and create an account. Remember! It's very important to keep track of your login credentials. This is especially important when completing the FAFSA Application to enter a post-secondary career training program.
  • Purchase & Complete all four practice tests. Individual practice tests are $7.99 each; to purchase a set of all four practice tests, the cost is $24.99.
  • Don't let the costs deter you. There are supports available. The MHA 477 Program can assist with GED Fees and potential training stipends. 477 GED Application
  • If you score high enough, you will get a notice stating you are ready to take the official test. If you do not score high enough, the system will generate a study guide for each topic based on the study material you have available to you.
  • All GED practice and official tests can be completed online; the key is to have a working microphone and camera on your laptop. If you have limited transportation, you can take it from home or a nearby location with accessible computers.Based on practice test scores, review your available online or hard-copy study materials according to the study guide.
  • Retake a practice test, and see how you have scored. If it says too close to call, or you are likely to pass, you can attempt the official test. Each official test costs $36.00.
  • NHS College Adult Education is available as an in-person option in the New Town area. If you need an in-person site that is not located near you, search for one when setting up your GED.com account. Individuals who were on IEPs should connect with a center.
  • Do you just need a copy of your GED? For North Dakota, print, complete, and mail with payment to request a copy. If you earned your GED in another state, visit the state’s website for Adult Education.

Don’t forget to set a goal for each test and give yourself a realistic timeline to achieve it. There is a difference between discipline and motivation. Discipline is about committing, whether you feel like it or not, and it is required to reach your goals. We wish you well on this endeavor.

Reasoning Through Language Arts:

The language test is 150 minutes long and divided into three parts. The topics covered in this exam are grammar and reading comprehension. There’s also an essay portion, which you’ll have 45 minutes to complete. One break is provided. Language Arts Testing tools:  http://www.gedtestingservice.com/rlalink

Mathematical Reasoning:

This 115-minute exam will test your knowledge of basic mathematics, geometry, and algebra. You’ll also work with functions and graphs. This test is broken into two parts with a quick break in the middle. Testing Tools:  http://www.gedtestingservice.com/mathlink

Science:

While some knowledge of scientific terms will help, you don’t have to memorize facts and formulas to do well on this test. Instead, the test focuses on reading and interpreting charts, graphs, and passages. It lasts 90 minutes. Testing Tools: http://www.gedtestingservice.com/sciencelink

Social Studies:

During this 70-minute exam, you will examine reading selections and charts to find information and draw conclusions. You do not have to memorize historical facts to pass this test.
